Are Plastic Face Shields Better than Cloth?

Since the beginning of the COVID pandemic, according to the CDC, the main contender for protecting oneself from the virus has been masking. Plastic face shields have been becoming more popular to use as, by appearance, they seem to be more effective and are also more comfortable and accessible for communities such as the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. However, research shows that using a plastic face shield alone does not offer enough protection.

Plastic face shields reduce the risk of contracting, just as a cloth mask does, but it does not create a barrier around the mask and leaves open areas where droplets can be inhaled thus causing infection. A recent study showed that a plastic mask blocked the forward motion of droplets from a sneeze or cough, but these droplets could still enter the spaces around the mask as they spread apart the large surface area. Another study showed that between those using cloth masks and those using plastic face shields, none of those wearing cloth masks contracted the virus while several who were wearing plastic face shields did.

While a plastic face shield is not better than a cloth one, it does have its advantages for the deaf community and those who rely on lip-reading to communicate as well as those who have respiratory issues. However, currently there are masks on the market which offer a plastic, fog-resistant, mouth window that is FDA approved ASTM level 1 protection which can be used to ensure that masking can still be accessible.

The best argument between using plastic face shields or cloth masks is to use both in conjunction to maximize prevention. If one wants to get the best use of a plastic face shield, they should engage in three things:

1. Wear with a cloth mask

2. Ensure that it fits properly to keep droplets from entering: Check that your face shield fits properly by checking if it comes level to your chin or below, that it almost reaches your ears, and that there is no gap between the front of the shield and your forehead unless there is a cover in place.

3. Clean and disinfect after each use: follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding cleaning, if available. If not, it is suggested to use a neutral detergent and warm water for visible dirt and grime, then rinse with warm water. To disinfect, it is recommended to use a chlorine-based solution over an alcohol based one to preserve the plastic for any antiglare or antifogging properties.

Overall, it is highly recommended by the CDC to use plastic face shields and cloth masks in conjunction in order to protect yourself at the highest level; the more that both are used together by a larger amount of the population, then mutual protection occurs. By continuing to social distance, engage in proper hand washing techniques and hygiene, staying home as often as possible, as well as masking with a cloth mask or plastic face shields in conjunction with cloth masks, the spread of the virus is lessened.
