CDC News Release: CDC Investigates Strep A Cases
An outbreak of invasive group A streptococcus (iGAS) has recently been reported in several states across the United States. This type of bacteria can cause serious and potentially life-threatening infections, such as strep throat and necrotizing fasciitis (also known as flesh-eating disease). It is important to be aware of the symptoms, risks, and treatments for iGAS to protect yourself and your loved ones from this potentially deadly infection.
What is invasive group A strep?
Group A strep is a type of bacteria that is commonly found in the throat and on the skin. While it is usually not harmful, in rare cases it can cause serious infections, particularly in people with compromised immune systems. These infections are known as invasive group A strep (iGAS) infections.
Symptoms of iGAS infection
Symptoms of iGAS infection can vary depending on the type of infection and the part of the body affected. Common symptoms of iGAS infections include:
- Sore throat
- Fever
- Rash
- Swelling
- Redness
- Pain
- Fatigue
In more severe cases, iGAS infections can cause necrotizing fasciitis, which is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that causes the flesh to die. Symptoms of necrotizing fasciitis may include:
- Swelling
- Redness
- Pain
- Fever
- Rapid heart rate
Risks and complications of iGAS infection
iGAS infections can be serious and can lead to complications, such as sepsis (a potentially life-threatening condition caused by the body’s response to infection) and organ damage. People with compromised immune systems, such as those with HIV or cancer, are at a higher risk of developing iGAS infections.
Treatment of iGAS infection
iGAS infections are typically treated with antibiotics. In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary. It is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible if you suspect you or a loved one may have an iGAS infection.
Prevention of iGAS infection
There are several steps you can take to help prevent iGAS infections:
- Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, particularly after using the bathroom and before preparing food.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Avoid sharing personal items, such as toothbrushes, with others.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
If you or a loved one is experiencing symptoms of an iGAS infection, it is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible. By being aware of the symptoms, risks, and treatments for iGAS, you can help protect yourself and your loved ones from this potentially serious infection.
