On June 21, children between the ages of 6 months to 5 years old were finally able to receive the COVID vaccine. This group is the last group to be offered protections against COVID. Pediatricians, drug stores, hospitals and community vaccination centers can now administer the first two doses of Pfizer-BioNTech to children 6 months to 4 years old in a three dose series at 3 micrograms per dose. The Moderna vaccine can be administered to children 6 months to 5 years old, in two child doses, four weeks apart, at 25 micrograms per dose. Vaccine side effects are similar in children as seen in adults.

President Joe Biden stated that opening vaccinations to children under 5 is a “very historic milestone, a monumental step forward.” while addressing the topic. The United States is now the first nation to offer the COVID vaccine to children in this age group; Biden urged parents to begin getting their children vaccinated.

Current polls being run on the opinions of vaccinating children show that more than a third of parents, 38 percent polled, are wary of vaccinating their children and would wait until after other children were vaccinated before deciding. 27 percent reported that they would
“definitely not” have their children vaccinated. 18 percent were willing to vaccinate while 11 would only do so if it were required.

In New York, there was a one day delay on receiving stock for vaccines while the state Health Department waited for final approval. Florida refused to preorder the vaccine until the administration of Gov. Ron DeSantis allowed doctors to request it — they will not be receiving vaccines until the end of the week. President Biden’s response: “elected officials shouldn’t get in the way and make it more difficult[…]this is no time for politics.” speaking in favor of parents that were interested in having their children vaccinated.

While young children are less likely than the rest of the population to get COVID and become seriously ill, they are not invulnerable. More than 1,000 COVID related deaths have occurred in young children and more than 40,000 have been hospitalized.
