Just as it seemed that Covid-19 cases were on the decline, New York has begun to see a spike in cases once again. Currently, their average new cases within a seven day period is at 2.52%, this number is reminiscent to the numbers seen in June during the first surge. Alongside this, hospitalizations and deaths due to the virus are rising as well. Mayor Bill de Blasio took to Twitter to state that “this is our LAST chance to stop a second wave” amidst these rising numbers.

If a regional rise occurs, there are 5 important things to consider:

1. Limitations will be put into place

New York will begin to limit private indoor gatherings to 10 people and begin implementing a 10 PM curfew for bars and restaurants. Governor Cuomo has already issued statewide restrictions and has indicated that local governments should enforce in order to contain the virus.

2. Staten Island is the current highest in 7 day positive test rates

Other than the city, Staten Island has two zip codes–10307 and 10308–that have risen above 5% and seven in total that have more than 3%; they will have even stricter limitations put into place. Mayor Blasio has sent volunteers and staff to assist in PPE administration, information outreach, and to offer testing to these areas.

3. Schools may have to close

If the city exceeds 3% in its 7 day average, Mayor Blasio will close public schools and will make plans for reopening when the numbers fall. There is pushback from staff and the 300,000 students who are enrolled in in-person schooling. This stems from the low rate of cases (just 0.17%) occurring in schools.

4. The real estate market will take another hit

The market has already seen a steep decline, with the steepest seen in Manhattan, with almost 9% down on rent prices compared to last year. Overall, there has been over $1.4 billion in lost tax revenue according to the state board. Luxury homes and apartments are seeing an 11% decrease in sales and new listings are down 21% — lockdown procedures and resident relocations during the pandemic have perpetuated this decline.

5. New Jersey has also implemented new restrictions

New Jersey has reported 3,078 new cases since Wednesday and 15 deaths — their average 7 day rate is currently at 7.95%. They have begun to close nightclubs and restaurants at 10 PM and have placed restrictions on out-of-state travel for high school sports teams. In the state’s largest city, Newark, 19% of those tested over 3 days last week were positive. They now have a 9 PM curfew and 10 person cap for gatherings until December, as well as all team sports cancellations and nursing home visitor restrictions.

The effects of Covid-19 in New York are relentless and it’s unyielding effect on one of the biggest economical and cultural powerhouses of America are staggering to say the least, but the cooperation of the country, states, and its citizens can help lower the severity of the virus.
