COVID Vaccine Still Recommended if You’ve had COVID

As we near the weeks for second immunization to those who have received their COVID vaccine, more people are beginning to have access to the vaccine, experience side effects, and begin to be protected against it. With that, several people who have already had COVID before have been wondering: do I still need to get the vaccine if I already had COVID? The answer is yes.

Those who have had COVID are still being encouraged to get vaccinated as natural immunity may wane over time. There have also been many cases of reinfection, meaning that it is possible that natural immunity may not be enough to protect against COVID and getting the vaccine may help decrease the risk of another infection. Doctors speculate that natural immunity only lasts for about three to four months, though they are still researching this.

Natural immunity occurs when the body is exposed to the virus, this can happen by being a carrier or by contracting disease after coming in contact with SARS-CoV-2. After exposure, your body can then respond if it comes in contact with the virus again. With the vaccine, one can be up to 95% immune from getting the virus; together, with natural immunity, those who have had COVID before are suggested to get the vaccine to give a boost to their natural immunity. Vaccines also provide a more consistent immune response than natural immunity alone.

The CDC advises that one who has had COVID should wait until 90 days after recovering before receiving the vaccine, as well as waiting until those who have not had the vaccine yet or are in the high-risk demographic.
