Cucumber Recalls Linked to Salmonella Outbreak Across 19 States
Federal health officials are warning consumers to avoid eating recalled cucumbers, along with salads, wraps, party trays, and meal kits that may contain them. This precaution follows an outbreak of salmonella that has sickened at least 68 people in 19 U.S. states and resulted in 18 hospitalizations.
Recalled Cucumbers and Affected Products
Three companies — SunFed Produce, Baloian Farms, and Russ Davis Wholesale — have issued recalls for cucumbers grown by Agrotato, S.A. de C.V. in Sonora, Mexico. These cucumbers were sold by importers between October 12 and November 26, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The recalls include a range of products:
• Gyro Family Kits sold at Sprouts Farmers Market stores in 24 states with use-by dates through January 7, 2025.
• Beef & Lamb Gyro Sandwich Express Meal Kits distributed to Sam’s Club warehouses nationwide with use-by dates from December 24, 2024, to January 6, 2025.
• Cucumbers from SunFed Produce, sold at Costco locations in Houston and Dallas.
• Mediterranean-inspired party trays sold at Ralph’s stores in California and Smith’s stores in six other states.
• Vegetable trays and salads sold at Kroger and King Soopers retail stores in Colorado and Texas.
• Marketside Fresh Cut Cucumber Slices, sold at 34 Walmart stores in Texas.
• Grab-n-go Yummi Sushi, sold at Kroger stores in Texas.
Recalled cucumbers may have stickers labeled “SunFed Mexico” or be packaged in clear PamPak-branded bags of six cucumbers with a universal product code of 8 2540107010 6. Consumers should also be cautious of products such as Crazy Fresh Garden Salad, Quick & Easy Bacon Avocado Wraps, and Kowalski’s Market Garden Salad.
Distribution of Affected Cucumbers
The recalled cucumbers were distributed across multiple states, including but not limited to Arizona, California, Texas, Colorado, and New York. A full list of states can be found on the FDA’s recall notices.
Symptoms of Salmonella and Safety Precautions
Salmonella infection typically causes diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, with symptoms appearing six hours to six days after exposure. While most people recover within a week without treatment, severe cases may require medical attention, especially in children, older adults, or those with weakened immune systems.
Consumers are advised to:
• Check their refrigerators and freezers for recalled cucumbers and discard them if they match the recall criteria.
• Ask retailers about the origin of cucumbers purchased after October 12, 2024, if uncertain.
The Broader Impact of Foodborne Illnesses
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that salmonella and other foodborne pathogens cause over 50,000 hospitalizations annually, with more than 900 deaths attributed to foodborne illnesses.
