The Food and Drug administration has amended the Emergency Use Authorization for the Pfizer vaccine and has now changed it to allow a single dose booster dose. This dose is to be administered at least six months after the first series was completed, those applicable to a booster shot include:

· Those 65 years and older

· Those ages 18 through 64 years old who are at high risk for severe COVID-19 infection

· Those ages 18 through 64 years old whose occupational or institutional exposure to SARS-CoV-2 and puts them at risk for complications or severe COVID-19 infection

This update from the FDA only applies to the Pfizer vaccine based on the most updated data. Below is the FDA’ s statement by acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock, M.D.:

“Today’s action demonstrates that science and the currently available data continue to guide the FDA’s decision-making for COVID-19 vaccines during this pandemic. After considering the totality of the available scientific evidence and the deliberations of our advisory committee of independent, external experts, the FDA amended the EUA for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine to allow for a booster dose in certain populations such as health care workers, teachers and day care staff, grocery workers and those in homeless shelters or prisons, among others.”

Those with weakened immune systems can get a third dose as well, from Pfizer or Moderna. For continued updates on vaccine eligibility, keep up to date on the CDC’s website.
