Fisher-Price has issued a recall for more than 2 million Snuga Swings after the suffocation deaths of five infants, according to an announcement by the company and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall affects all models sold at major retailers, including Amazon, Target, Walmart, and Toys R Us, between October 2010 and January 2024.

The tragic incidents involved infants aged 1 to 3 months who were using the swings for sleep, primarily when bedding materials were added, and the infants were not restrained. These deaths occurred between 2012 and 2022.

Recall Details:
Approximately 2.1 million of the recalled swings were sold in the U.S., with another 99,000 in Canada and 500 in Mexico.
The swings were manufactured in China and Mexico.
Consumers are advised to immediately remove the headrest and body support insert from the seat pad before using the swing for any awake-time activities. Fisher-Price is offering a $25 refund to those who cut and destroy both components.

Risk of Suffocation:
The headrest and body support insert can pose a suffocation hazard if the swing is used for sleep or when additional bedding materials are placed in the swing.

For more information on the recall, consumers can contact Fisher-Price at 855–853–6224 or visit their website.

Criticism of the Remedy:
Consumer Reports criticized the recall, calling the remedy insufficient. They have advocated for a full refund and the permanent disposal of the swings. William Wallace, associate director of safety policy at the advocacy group, emphasized the need for stronger recalls, particularly in cases where infant deaths are involved.

This is not the first time Fisher-Price has recalled dangerous products. The Rock ‘n Play sleeper, linked to around 100 infant deaths, was recalled in 2019. The CPSC urges parents to avoid using inclined products like rockers, gliders, soothers, and swings for infant sleep due to the risk of suffocation.

Parents and caregivers should remain vigilant and avoid leaving babies unattended in such products or adding bedding materials.
