Mosquito activity is increasing as the summer comes to its height. Preventing mosquito bites can not only avoid discomfort, it also alleviates concern for contracting mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue fever, malaria, yellow fever, and Zika virus.

Use Insect Repellent

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) registered repellents including any of the active ingredients such as: DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), para-menthane-diol (PMD), or 2-undecanone, will provide protection against mosquitos when used as directed. These ingredients are safe and effective, even on those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Dump Standing Water

Mosquitos breed within 14 days in even small amounts of standing water. Dump any still or accumulated water at least once a week. Keep water flowing if you have a pond or water reserve near your home. Mosquito-eating fish like guppies, minnows, or mosquito fish can be added to the water or treat still water with Bacillus thuringiensis, a harmless bacterium that kills mosquito larvae.

Keep Mosquitos Outside

Use window screens and air conditioning to prevent mosquitoes from getting inside. If you don’t have screens, consider getting a fine mosquito net to hang over beds and cribs.

Make Yourself Less Appealing to Mosquitos

Avoiding deep colors like black, dark blue, and red can help prevent mosquitoes as these colors attract them. Wearing loose fit clothing, long sleeves, and pants as well as thicker clothing also offers protection against mosquitos. Keeping dry and cleaning sweat from the skin can also prevent mosquito bites.

Try to Stay Indoors at Dusk and Dawn

These are prime feeding times for mosquitos, try to avoid being outside at these times if possible and take precautions if you must be out at these times.
