How To Protect Yourself If Someone in Your Household has Covid
A myriad of fears and concerns can occur upon discovering that someone in your household has been infected with Covid, this can be both risky and life-threatening for everyone involved. Members of the household have a 50% risk of infection, but by following a few preventative measures, you can remain as safe as possible during the recovery time of the infected individual.
1. Get Tested
Try to as soon as possible, even if a negative result is received do not consider yourself completely free of infection. Make sure to get a second test 5–7 days after exposure as well. If you don’t want to get tested, quarantine for 14 days and monitor your symptoms. Inform anyone you or the infected person has come in contact with, as everyone in the household should be assumed to be positive.
2. Limit Contact with the Infected Person
This includes bedroom and bathroom. Remain at least six feet from them while they quarantine. If it is not possible to have them use a separate bedroom and bathroom, try to remain as far as possible in order to lower the rate of exposure. Studies have shown that a smaller viral load makes for a less severe infection. Limit physical interactions to necessities only.
3. Keep Windows Down
This improves overall ventilation and helps air out the area of droplets.
4. Wear a Mask
Both the infected person and those in the household should wear a mask according to the CDC. Cloth masks and surgical masks are great preventative measures. Goggles should also be considered to protect the eyes from airborne droplets.
5. Wash Hands and Disinfect Surfaces
Especially after being in contact with or near the infected person. Wash hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water. Use hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not readily available and avoid touching the eyes, nose and mouth, especially with unwashed hands. Clean and disinfect high-touch areas everyday like door handles, light switches, tables, counters, toilets, faucets and electronics.
6. Eat Healthy
Maintaining a healthy diet can keep your immune system high and prepared to fight an infection. Make sure to keep up basic maintenance of preexisting conditions like non-insulin dependent diabetes, heart conditions and obesity which increase the risk of illness.
7. Trust Reliable Sources and Keep Up to Date on Covid
Not all information found online and on social media is reliable and can lead to worsening conditions or even death. Making sure to do basic research and checking sources from what you hear and read can ensure a safe recovery. When in doubt, the CDC’s website has the most up-to-date information that can be used to fact check.
8. Talk to Friends and Family
Studies show that a healthy mind and positive mindset aid in the recovery of illness, express your emotions and look for support during difficult times. Allow yourself to process your fears and concerns with your loved ones to keep your mental health in check and aid in your emotional well being.
