Major Drop in Covid Cases Since Pfizer Vaccine Distributions
As we begin to see the effects of vaccinations around the world, countries are beginning to show the results of protection. Israel’s largest healthcare provider has reported that there has been a 94% drop in symptomatic COVID cases among 600,000 people who have completed both doses of the vaccine.
Clalit, the Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) which covers more than half of Israelis, have also stated that this group is also 92% less likely to develop a severe illness if they were to contract the virus. This inference was made by comparing the vaccinated group to a group of the same size who had matching medical histories and did not receive the vaccine.
This study shows the true effectiveness of the Pfizer vaccine which was seen during trials, proving its immense protection in the real world against the virus. Researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science have been keeping track of national data of the virus and have noticed the quick decline in hospitalizations and serious illnesses caused by COVID in the groups who were able to receive the vaccine first (those aged 60 or older). They had then noticed that hospitalizations and serious illness was still rising in the younger groups who had received their vaccinations two weeks later.
Through Israel’s rapid vaccine rollout procedures and their constant up to date database, they have been able to keep track of vaccine effectiveness and may be able to reach an inference on when countries might attain the effects of herd immunity through immunizations.
Public Health England has noted that the United Kingdom had a 70% drop in COVID cases after only one shot of the Pfizer vaccines that were administered to healthcare workers. This follows the original data from the trials which showed that the vaccine had a single dose effectiveness around 57–70% which would then increase after the second dose is administered.
The UK has been seeing a slow decline in hospitalizations and death in those vaccinated with the swiftest decline being those in the age group of 80 and older. The level of protection seems to remain the same even with the new B.1.1.7 variant.
Overall, these studies have shown that the vaccines, Pfizer’s especially, have been effective at protecting and minimizing the effects of a COVID-19 infection. With this, it is still important to remember that scientists are still unsure of if the vaccine prevents one from passing the virus onto someone else, especially if you are asymptomatic, so it is best to continue to social distance, wear your mask, practice good hand washing and ensure that you remain at home when possible to ensure everyone’s protection.
