Measles Cases Identified at New York City Migrant Shelter
At least two cases of measles have been confirmed at the Hall Street shelter in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, a temporary shelter for migrants designated as a Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Center (HERRC) by New York City. The infected individuals are currently quarantined on one floor of the building.
New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan stated that the Health Department and Health + Hospitals are working together to provide support and resources to anyone who may have been exposed to the virus. Individuals at the shelter who may have been exposed will undergo testing to confirm their vaccination status. Those unvaccinated will be required to quarantine for three weeks.
A spokesperson for Mayor Eric Adams noted that while vaccines are offered to migrants upon arrival, they are not mandatory. Despite the contagious nature of measles, Dr. Vasan reassured that the risk to the broader community remains low due to the high vaccination rate among New Yorkers.
Dr. Vasan emphasized the importance of vaccination, stating, “The single best way to prevent measles is to be vaccinated. We encourage anyone who has not been vaccinated against measles to contact a health care provider to get a vaccine.” Health officials confirmed that the risk of contracting measles is extremely low for vaccinated individuals.
