Nationwide Ice Cream Recall Due to Listeria Contamination Concerns

A major ice cream manufacturer, Maryland-based Totally Cool Inc., has issued a voluntary nationwide recall of multiple ice cream products over concerns of potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. This decision followed detection of the bacterium during routine testing by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Listeria monocytogenes is a dangerous bacterium that can cause severe food poisoning, particularly in young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems. Symptoms of infection include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. In pregnant women, listeria infection can result in miscarriages and stillbirths.
