A new COVID subvariant has hit the city of New York hard. Experts say it could be 60% more contagious and “the most transmissible” variant of all. This variant, BA.2, is one of two sub variants to emerge from the omicron variant.

Currently, this variant is accountable for over 50% of the infectious variants that are circulating through the New York region. (It should be mentioned that the CDC has included New Jersey, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands into this estimate).

Scientific research has not yet deemed this variant as any more severe in regards to COVID outcomes or vaccine effectiveness, but they have named the BA.2 variant as the most contagious strain overall.

While not wanting to raise any alarms on these new variants, officials still want to encourage increased precaution due to the infectiousness of the variants. Nationwide, BA.2 was responsible for 28% of all new cases, according to the CDC. This is 19% higher than the week before, meaning the variant’s share of new cases in the U.S. rose 47% in one week.

So far, COVID related hospitalizations have risen from 817 to 1,588 in New York, a much lower rise in comparison to other variants. This brings some hope that this variant is less virulent than previous variants but hospitalization rates will continue to be monitored.
