Tuesday morning, the New York City health department announced that the city has entered a “high alert” warning for COVID-19. The CDC designated 45 counties in New York as high-risk, including Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Putnam, Orange, and Ulster counties. Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island are still medium risk, while Bronx county is still low-risk.

The advisory issued Monday by Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan, urged New Yorkers to wear masks while indoors in locations such as grocery stores, lobbies, offices, and other indoor shared spaces. At-risk individuals should avoid crowded settings and non-essential get-togethers.

Masks should be high-quality KN95, KF94, and N95 respirators. Cloth masks should be tightly fitted with a snug fit.

“As a city, we have the tools to blunt the impact of this wave, including distributing tests, masks and promoting treatments. Getting back to Low Risk depends on everyone doing their part and if we follow guidance, our forecasts anticipate this wave’s peak will not last long. What we do now can make all the difference.” states Dr. Ashwin Vasan.

The move from a medium to high alert indicates that there is greater community spread and cases are on the rise. This decision was made due to the number of cases per 100,000 people in the last seven days and the percent of inpatient beds occupied by COVID-19 patients in the hospital. An indoor mask mandate has not yet been reinstated.

As of Monday morning, John Hopkins University counted 999,607 COVID related deaths in the United States.

Mayor Adams has stressed that even with current increases, the city has more resources and tools to fight a rise in cases. New Yorkers can find at-home test distribution pick up locations near them by using the city’s COVID-19 testing site (https://www1.nyc.gov/site/coronavirus/get-tested/covid-19-testing.page) or texting “COVID TEST” to 855–48. If one tests positive, they can call 212-COVID19 to be connected to resources.
