A New York resident has tested positive for the mosquito-borne eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus, marking the first human case in the state in nearly a decade, according to the state health department. The patient, who lives in Ulster County, is currently hospitalized. The Ulster County Department of Health is conducting an investigation into the case. Earlier this summer, a horse in the same county also tested positive for EEE.

This is the first confirmed human case in New York since 2015. Nationwide, there have been at least 10 cases reported this year, including one case in New Jersey and a fatal case in New Hampshire.

What is EEE?
Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) is a rare but serious viral disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes. While most people infected with the virus do not develop symptoms, severe cases can begin with signs such as headache, high fever, chills, and vomiting. The disease can be fatal in approximately 30% of cases, and survivors may experience lasting neurological damage. Currently, there is no vaccine available for EEE.

How to Protect Yourself
Health officials recommend that residents take precautions to avoid mosquito bites, including:

Wearing long sleeves and pants when outdoors
Using insect repellents
Installing screens on windows and doors
Eliminating standing water around homes to reduce mosquito breeding grounds
