New York Sets Up Short Term Mask Mandate
New York has implemented a short term mask mandate as COVID related hospitalizations rise 56% in a month; Governor Kathy Hochul did not state how long the mandate will last.
A federal judge voided the CDC’s mask mandate, allowing the TSA to no longer enforce masking. Hochul emphasized that the CDC’s recommendation does not follow the judge’s veto and still encourages masking in places where there are people in high volume and overall vaccination status is unknown.
Hochul plans to continue to uphold the current mask mandate, even if it is a short term plan, especially due to New York’s status as one of the highest COVID risk states. Initially, the CDC extended the mask mandate in order to further study the BA.2 omicron variant.
New Jersey transit and Amtrak have made face coverings optional. Meanwhile, subway and buses run by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the city’s taxi and limo commission, and Uber and Lyft are still requiring masking. Indoor restaurants, gyms, and entertainment venues are subject to the venue. Hospitals, nursing homes, and homeless shelters are requiring masks in order to enter regardless of vaccination status
A poll done by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs showed that the majority of Americans continue to support a mask requirement for people traveling on planes and other shared transportation.
