Sandra Lindsay, a nurse from Queens, NY is the first in the US to receive the Pfizer vaccine as reported by the New York post on December 14th. Lindsay is a critical care nurse at Long Island Medical Center who stated that by receiving the vaccine she hopes to “instill public confidence that the vaccine is safe”.

New York’s governor, Andrew Cuomo wants to prioritize healthcare workers during distribution of the vaccine to show his gratitude as they have risked their lives daily throughout the span of the pandemic.

Connecticut, New York, Iowa, Washington D.C and Michigan are expected to administer vaccine doses throughout the upcoming week. These doses are currently limited and most people will have to wait several months before getting access. First supply will be limited as it will be given to healthcare personnel and long term care facility residents.

Regular preventative practices — masking, hand washing and social distancing — should be continued during and after vaccination phases.

A new variant of the SARS-Cov-2 has been discovered in the UK and is raising concerns, however, so far there is “nothing to suggest that it will cause a worse disease or hinder vaccine effectiveness.”

Dr. Archana Chatterjee, who voted NO on the use of the Pfizer vaccine for emergency use, explains that she does not believe 16/17 year olds should be included in the demographic group to receive the vaccine and it should remain only for the 18+ population; the other three NO votes shared the same opinion.

The CDC has also reduced their recommendation time for those exposed to the virus. They affirm that 7 days quarantine for a negative test and a 10 day quarantine if not testing is sufficient. While a 14 day quarantine is still ideal, the alternatives have been proven to be acceptable.

Dr. Fauci expects the effects of the vaccines to begin manifesting around fall 2021, but this is dependent on the level of vaccinations given amongst the population. He appeared on CNN to encourage the public to get their vaccinations to reach at least 90% immunizations; this will ensure that herd immunity will be the most effective.

One of the main factors that will lower the rate of vaccinations is the mistrust of the public in regards to the vaccine and the current “viral hoaxes” floating around. In the states, the current hoax is that the vaccine is a ruse for microchip planting — in the UK there is one surrounding their first vaccine recipient.

90-year-old Margaret Keenan was the first to receive the vaccine in the UK, many believe her to have been dead or nonexistent; She is the first in the world to receive the vaccine outside of a clinical testing setting. The UK is also administering the vaccine to frontline health long-term care workers, starting with hospitals then doctors offices, and residents over 80 first.

As of now, the vaccine supply goal, which was originally 100 million, is now only at 50 million however there is still the expectation that the initial 100 million will still be needed.
