NYC Council Speaker Pledges to Prioritize Maternal Health After Childbirth Deaths
New York City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams reaffirmed her commitment to making maternal health a top priority following the recent deaths of two women of color during childbirth at Woodhull Hospital. The tragic events have brought increased attention to maternal mortality in the city’s public health system.
Tragic Losses at Woodhull Hospital
Jose Perez and Nelson Ramirez, both of whom lost their wives to complications during C-sections at Woodhull Hospital, shared their stories, highlighting the devastating impact of these preventable deaths. According to city data, there have been three maternal deaths at the city-run hospital since 2020.
Adams expressed deep concern, stating, “We are failing women during one of the most vulnerable periods of their lives.” She called on city, state, and federal health leaders to work together to end maternal mortality, emphasizing that these issues extend beyond Woodhull Hospital and reflect systemic problems.
Overwhelmed Public Hospitals
Adams pointed to staffing shortages and inadequate resources as contributing factors to the crisis, saying, “Our public hospitals are overwhelmed.” She stressed that most maternal deaths, both in New York City and nationwide, are preventable. A significant issue, she noted, is the lack of clear communication between healthcare providers and patients during childbirth.
Addressing Health Disparities
Maternal mortality disproportionately affects women of color, particularly Black and brown women. Adams highlighted how structural racism and inadequate access to healthcare exacerbate these disparities, making quality treatment inaccessible for many low-income and immigrant women. On average, 20 women die each year in New York City due to pregnancy- or childbirth-related complications.
Since 2019, 57 pregnancy-associated deaths have been recorded in the city. Adams and other health leaders are committed to addressing these disparities and improving maternal healthcare, although Adams acknowledged there is no immediate solution to the ongoing crisis.
Improving Maternal Care
Midwife Patricia Loftman advises expectant mothers to seek out healthcare facilities with well-integrated midwifery services to improve their childbirth experience. While improvements have been made in the city’s healthcare system, families who have recently lost loved ones believe that progress is not happening quickly enough.
New York City Health + Hospitals has stated that they are focused on reducing maternal mortality rates, especially among women of color, and have made strides in maternal health care. However, the recent deaths underscore the urgent need for continued efforts and reforms.
