Omicron Variant now Detected in 12 U.S. States
As Delta cases are continuing to rise, the new Omicron variant has been detected in 12 U.S states. Currently, 32 cases have been reported in California, New Jersey, Utah, Colorado, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Nebraska, Hawaii, New York, Minnesota, and Massachusetts and these numbers are rising. Experts and researchers are still attempting to find out if the vaccine will prevent severe cases caused by the Omicron variant, though many are hypothesizing that some level of protection is there for anyone who has at least one dose.
As far as the cases that have been detected go, most have reported them as mild cases among vaccinated people or asymptomatic. Many of the reported symptoms are not aligned with what we are used to hearing with COVID-19. Fatigue, headaches, and slight sore throats have been detected but without the loss of taste or smell; with so little data on the variant, it is difficult to anticipate how the Omicron variant will affect U.S citizens or its severity.
One man who tested positive for the Omicron variant stated that 15 of his 30 friends who travelled with him to an anime convention in New York have all tested positive for COVID-19. This man was one of the first reported cases of the Omicron variant, and this raises the question of whether or not the variant has spread throughout the convention. Health officials are still unsure which of the 15 cases are Omicron; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are tracing the spread to determine if there are more Omicron cases.
Kris Ehreshmann, director of the Infectious Disease Epidemiology, Prevention, and Control Division at the Minnesota Department of Health stated “We don’t know if we’ll see a lot of Omicron or we’ll see a lot of Delta,” in regards to the cases occurring after the convention. Overall, health officials are urging everyone to remain in a state of calm and continue their preventative practices.
