Pandemic Responses Change in New York as COVID Cases Plummet
As of now, more than 17 million doses of the vaccine have been administered in the state of New York. Mayor Eric Adams announced that as COVID cases and hospitalizations are decreasing, the Key to NYC program has been suspended and indoor mask mandates in city public schools for K-12 students has been removed.
Two years ago, New York City was the epicenter of the pandemic, but thanks to New Yorkers getting vaccinated and getting boosted we have made tremendous progress,” Mayor Eric Adams. “I’ve said time and time again that the numbers and science will guide us as we continue to recover and rebuild, and now New York City is back, and vaccinations are why we’re back. New Yorkers should be getting out and enjoying our amazing city.”
Key to NYC rules that are no longer in effect include the cessation of vaccination status confirmation for indoor venues such as restaurants, fitness centers, and entertainment centers. Businesses covered by the Key to NYC rules are able to decide whether or not they want to continue checking vaccination status or enforce indoor masking.
Public school children in grades K-12 can still wear a mask if they wish however, it is no longer required. Schools will continue to maintain strict COVID protocols regarding proper ventilation, daily screening, and testing kit distributions. Masks will still be required in classrooms where children are under the age of 5.
All other COVID mandates remain in effect, including vaccine requirements for employees unless exempted.
