Pfizer Contemplates COVID-19 Vaccine Pill
Vaccination numbers are slowly rising as time passes and education surrounding the vaccine increases. In an attempt to speed up the process even more, Pfizer has stated that they are in the beginning processes of developing other forms of the COVID-19 vaccine: in a pill or nasal spray. This method would administer the vaccine quickly and effortlessly, as well as increase the accessibility overall as it will not need to be administered in a hospital.
Pfizer is in its research stages and determining the efficacy and if other forms of the vaccine will be just as effective as the injectable vaccine. A pill or nasal spray option also can help reach individuals who have strong fears of needles, strong enough to deter them from getting vaccinated, as well as with children who tend to have needle phobias.
These options, especially the pill, could stop the a COVID-19 infection even at the first sign of illness. It uses what is known as protease inhibitors, which inhibits the enzymes that allow a virus to replicate in human cells, thus fighting off an infection; this technology is used to treat HIV and Hepatitis C.
Pfizer hopes to have this option released by the end of 2021 and there are other vaccine companies, such as Oravax, working on vaccine pills of their own as well.
Professor Paul Hunter from University of East Anglia has said that while there is no guarantee that a pill, or a nasal spray, can stop a COVID-19 infection, it is still a positive step forward in the fight against COVID. New therapeutic treatments overall help fight and protect from future infections.
