In an interview, President Biden said that the COVID pandemic is over but not all health experts agree.

President Joe Biden appeared on 60 Minutes on September 18th. One of the topics discussed was the COVID-19 pandemic. In the 60 Minutes interview, he said “The pandemic is over. We still have a problem with COVID. We’re still doing a lot of work on it. But the pandemic is over. If you notice, no one’s wearing masks. Everybody seems to be in pretty good shape, and so I think it’s changing.”1.

So many people are questioning “Is the pandemic really over?”, and “Do we not need to worry about COVID anymore?”. Let’s review the current numbers. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in September 2022 there has been an average of 50,397 new covid cases daily, 354 covid deaths daily, and 3,761 new daily hospital covid admissions2. Fortunately, all of these numbers have decreased since August 2022.

What do health experts think of President Biden’s remarks? Dr. Anthony Fauci said, “We are not where we need to be if we’re going to be able to, quote, ‘live with the virus’, because we know we’re not going to eradicate it…How we respond and how we’re prepared for the evolution of these variants is going to depend on us and that gets to the other conflicting aspect of this — is the lack of a uniform acceptance of the interventions that are available to us in this country”1.

Since the COVID pandemic has affected the world and not just the United States it is important to remember that other countries are involved and the World Health Organization (WHO) is responsible for overseeing COVID tracking around the world. Per infectious disease expert Dr. Supriya Narasimhan, “Individual governments can decide if the disease activity in their country merits restrictions of public health measures but the end of the pandemic is typically a decision made by the WHO”3.

The bottom line is that even though the COVID numbers and precautions are decreasing, COVID is still a valid concern for most people. With the cooler months approaching you should continue to be diligent about hand washing, staying home if you feel unwell, and staying up to date on vaccinations. This will help not only prevent the spread of COVID but also the flu and other illnesses.
