Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Cucumbers Spreads to 25 States
A salmonella outbreak connected to cucumbers has spread to 25 states and the District of Columbia, affecting at least 162 people and leading to 54 hospitalizations, according to health officials.
Federal and state agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), are investigating the outbreak. Initial data suggests that cucumbers may be contaminated with salmonella. Testing identified salmonella in a Fresh Start Produce sample, prompting a recall of cucumbers shipped to 14 states. However, these cucumbers may have been distributed to additional states or repackaged for different stores.
Testing is ongoing to confirm the contamination source. Salmonella infections can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in young children, the elderly, or those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms in healthy individuals include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, the bacteria can enter the bloodstream and cause severe complications.
The illnesses began on March 11 and continued through mid-May. The affected states include Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.
In addition, the CDC and FDA are investigating a separate salmonella outbreak with 158 reported illnesses in 23 states. Investigators are exploring whether the two outbreaks are connected to the same food source.
Salmonella infections cause approximately 1.3 million illnesses, 26,500 hospitalizations, and 420 deaths annually in the U.S., with food being the primary source. Those with severe symptoms should contact their healthcare provider. Most people recover without specific treatment and should avoid antibiotics unless necessary.
Consumers are advised not to eat any recalled cucumbers and to thoroughly wash any surfaces or utensils that may have come into contact with them. If you are unsure whether your cucumbers are part of the recall, it is safer not to consume them.
