The COVID Vaccine and Its benefits

As of December 22, 2020, New York has received 630,000 doses of the vaccine with 140,000 administered and 250,000 more doses expected to be received by the end of the week; 90 regional distribution centers have been set up with the ability to store the vaccine at its required temperature. In order for the vaccine to reach peak effectiveness it is imperative that at least 75–85% of the population is vaccinated to be able to protect the vulnerable and immunocompromised.

New York’s Governor Cuomo has appointed members to the New York Clinical Advisory Task Force. This task force is composed of the nation’s leading scientists, doctors, and health experts to help bring awareness and trust in the vaccine as well as encourage citizens to vaccinate by advocating for its safety and effectiveness. They will also work on addressing the rush to get the vaccine on the market through data sources and private third-party independent organizations — taking part in advising the state of New York on vaccine safety profile and legal authority to withhold or pause distribution is also part of the duties of the Clinical Advisory Task Force.

The clinical trials necessary for a vaccine to be distributed at a fast pace ensure that the benefits outweigh the risks, this is mandated through an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) released by the FDA. An EUA pools together all the financial resources available to allow the vaccine go through the process of research, clinical trials, manufacturing, and other medical procedures that go into creating intervention — this allows for a speedier process due to greater access to said resources. Because of the time sensitive nature, the EUA board must make decisions based on current knowledge and information alongside testing to allow for emergency use without the process of waiting for more evidence.

Both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines have been authorized via the EUA and have been shown to be highly effective at preventing COVID-19 through carefully evaluated clinical trials which prove it less likely for you to get the virus, or prevent a much more serious illness if you do, by providing immunity.

COVID vaccines are mRNA vaccines that create the blueprint for the proteins to induce immune response if the virus is detected in the body. Immunity can be gained naturally if you get COVID but there are serious implications that could occur by getting sick which cannot be predicted and does not remove the possibility of infecting others. By getting the vaccine, you receive immunity benefits without these risks.
