The Latest Coronavirus Numbers in New York City
The Omicron variant has been sweeping the world quickly and coronavirus statistics have risen significantly in the last month. Large cities have been hit especially hard. New York City (NYC) has a human population of over 8 million people on a land area of a little over 300 square miles. This makes preventing the spread of COVID extremely difficult. Even the fully vaccinated and boosted are not fully protected from COVID and there have been breakthrough cases.
As of the evening of January 7, 2022 there has been a total of 1,823,545 confirmed coronavirus cases in NYC. This number may be underestimated due to the use of at-home testing kits because sometimes these cases are not reported. NYC has had an estimated total of 35,792 deaths attributed to the coronavirus since the spring of 2020.
COVID vaccinations started being administered in December 2020. The vaccination was first only available to healthcare workers and our most vulnerable populations but is now available to everyone aged 5 years old and up. In NYC, 6,863,913 residents or 82.3% have at least gotten one vaccine dose. Vaccination is the best prevention against coronavirus at this time. Even if you are fully vaccinated and boosted it is still recommended that you wear a mask, social distance, and practice good hand hygiene.
New York City is made up of five boroughs which are Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Staten Island, and the Bronx. As of January 6, 2022 Brooklyn has had the most cases of all the boroughs. Brooklyn has had a total of 548, 388 coronavirus cases and 11, 313 deaths attributed to coronavirus. Queens has had the second most cases with a total of 500,152 and 10, 673 deaths. It is not surprising that Brooklyn and Queens are the most cases of all the boroughs because they are the most populated.
The borough of Manhattan comes in third with significantly lower numbers. Manhattan has had a total of 319,508 COVID cases and 4,786 deaths attributed to COVID. The Bronx comes in fourth with a total of 319,508 COVID cases and 6,991 deaths. Lastly, Staten Island has had a total of 135,947 total COVID cases and 2,029 deaths.
To put these numbers in perspective the entire state of New York has had a total of 3,975,745 coronavirus cases and 60,358 coronavirus deaths. The entire United States has had a total of 59,114,417 coronavirus cases and 835,929 deaths attributed to coronavirus. These numbers may be underestimated due to the new at-home testing kits and people not reporting their cases to the state.
Research has shown that even though vaccination will not provide 100% protection against coronavirus, it will aid in preventing severe cases, hospitalization, and death. According to the NYC Department of Health, only 4.9% of fully vaccinated people have had breakthrough COVID cases. Of those people only .15% of them have been hospitalized. This shows that vaccination is the best method to prevent coronavirus.
