Using An Urgent Care Facility

Emergency Rooms used to be the only option when you needed to see a doctor after hours. But today, Urgent Cares are a convenient option that many people can use for common injuries and illnesses.

Injuries and Urgent Care

There are several injuries that an Urgent Care can treat. The wait time is usually much shorter at an Urgent Care than at an Emergency Room. A visit to the Urgent Care is also less expensive than a visit to an Emergency Room.

Fractures and Sprains: Minor fractures, such as those that occur due to participating in sports, can be treated at an Urgent Care. Most Urgent Care facilities have x-ray machines so that the fracture can be assessed. Sprains can also be treated at an Urgent Care facility.

Cuts and Lacerations: Cuts and lacerations can be treated at Urgent Care facilities. Cuts and lacerations caused by glass need to be treated by a medical professional. The glass should be removed at the Urgent Care facility. If the cut or laceration was caused by a foreign object the patient may need a tetanus shot. Urgent Care facilities can administer that shot. Any cut that is deep, longer than a half inch, has ragged edges, or is still bleeding after 5–10 minutes of direct pressure needs to be assessed by a health professional. These conditions usually require stitches. Health professionals at Urgent Care facilities can provide stitches to patients.

Burns: Burns are rated by degrees. They range from first degree to fourth degree. First degree burns are the least serious while fourth degree burns are the most serious. First degree burns do not need medical attention and can be treated at home. Urgent Care facilities can only treat second degree burns. Third and fourth degree burns must be treated in an Emergency Room at a hospital.

  • First Degree Burns: These burns are superficial and only affect the outer layer of skin. The skin will be red and there will be no blisters.
  • Second Degree Burns: These burns affect the outer layer and part of the next layer, the dermis. The skin will be read and blistered. It may also be swollen.
  • Third Degree Burns: These burns affect the outer layer and all of the dermis. It may also affect the next layer of skin. Third degree burns will look white or blackened.
  • Fourth Degree Burns: These burns affect the layers of the skin, as well as, the tissue underneath the skin. Muscles and bones may also be involved. Nerve endings have been destroyed so there is no pain at the burn site.

Head Injuries: A head injury can be evaluated at an Urgent Care facility. Health providers can assess the severity of the head injury and then make a decision if further medical attention will be needed. If it is determined that the head injury is severe enough to require admission into a hospital the patient can be easily transported.

Illnesses and Urgent Care

Many common illnesses can be diagnosed and treated at an Urgent Care facility when a patient is unable to visit his/her family doctor. The cost of visiting an Urgent Care facility is less than the cost of visiting an Emergency Room.

Common infections can be diagnosed and treated at an Urgent Care facility. This includes: pink eye, ear infections, sinus infections, upper respiratory infections, and urinary tract infections.

Common viruses can also be diagnosed and treated at an Urgent Care facility. This includes: strep throat, flu, and bronchitis.

Other Services Provided

Besides providing care for injuries and illnesses, Urgent Care facilities also provide health services. These facilities provide vaccinations such as the flu shot. They also provide school, work, and sports physicals. Some Urgent Care facilities also provide treatment for STDs.

Cost

Visiting an Urgent Care facility will always be less expensive than a visit to an emergency room. An average Urgent Care visit is between $100–200 dollars. A visit to the Emergency Room will be at least $500. To save even more money, check with your local Urgent Care facility. Many facilities are now offering video visits or televisits. The average cost of a virtual visit is $30–75. Check with your insurance company. Many plans include coverage for Urgent Care visits, with lower fees for in network facilities. If you are uninsured, many Urgent Care facilities have payment plans for patients. They may also offer a discount when you pay in cash. Many Urgent Care facilities will list the cost of their services on their website. Alternatively, you can call and ask the facility for an estimated cost.

Emergency Room or Urgent Care?

It is important to understand that there are some health issues that cannot be addressed at an Urgent Care facility. These include life-threatening situations such as:

  • heart attacks
  • strokes
  • severe difficulty breathing
  • head injuries

If you or a family member has any of the above life-threatening situations 911 should be called because a visit to the Emergency Room is required.
