Overall, healthcare professionals have not shown a preference over either vaccine due to their similarities in both safety and effectiveness profiles. Unless specifically sought out on a person-to-person basis, by simply going through your doctor, which vaccine you receive will be largely dependent upon where you live.

Due to the heavy demand of vaccines, doctors are not looking for specifically one vaccine over the other and rather are working with what is available to them. Generally, It may be more common to see the Moderna vaccine in rural communities and smaller facilities due to its higher storing temperature compared to Pfizer’s, removing the need for special freezers to store the vaccine. Alternatively, you might see Pfizer vaccines in more heavily populated cities and large hospitals facilities because they will be able to properly store this vaccine.

Researchers are currently looking at what may be causing the severe anaphylactic shock side effect and speculate that it may be PEG-2000 (polyethylene glycol). Moderna has shown signs that it may offer protection from asymptomatic disease, which could save many, though this has not yet been proven.

What distributors of the vaccine are currently struggling with is the number of unused vaccinations — roughly 12 million; this number is well under the 20 million vaccinations expected under Former President Trump’s Administration. There is also no current national plan on vaccine distribution, instead it has been left to the States to decide distribution, this could be the cause to the numbers not quite reaching the goal. With hospitals and clinics reaching an overwhelming number of cases being treated a day, adequate time and resources have not been allocated to proper vaccine distribution.

The most optimal mode of distribution so far has been seen in a hospital which used a large auditorium with designated nurses assigned to give vaccinations. Once a person received their vaccination, they were ushered off to a pharmacist in another holding area to wait 30 minutes to ensure no adverse reaction occurred, meanwhile the nurse was already inoculating the next patient. This method vaccinated about 12 people every thirty minutes.
