Moderna Vaccine: Get the Facts

Following the release of the Pfizer vaccine, the Moderna vaccine has been out on the market since early December. This mRNA vaccine is delivered intramuscularly in the arm in two doses over 28 days and is one of two contenders against COVID-19. This vaccine is egg, latex, and preservative free and is recommended for those over the age of 18.

Allergy Concerns

Concerns surrounding this vaccine include those who could have a severe allergic reaction or immediate allergic reaction to any ingredient listed in the vaccine or if you have a reaction after receiving the first dose — if this is the case, it is recommended that you do not get vaccinated. If you have had a reaction to any other vaccine it is recommended that you consult your health care provider before getting vaccinated.

An immediate reaction happens within four hours and includes hives, swelling, or wheezing. The ingredients polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polysorbate are ingredients known to cause allergic reactions; while polysorbate is not in either vaccine, it is closely related to PEG which is used in the Moderna vaccine. Those with an allergy to polysorbate are advised to not get vaccinated.

Side Effects and Safety

The most common side effects to Moderna are:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Redness

The above reactions are localized to the injection site. Other symptoms include tiredness, chills, and headaches; these usually begin within a day to two and may mimic flu-like symptoms which may affect your ability to complete your daily activities. These reactions should go away in a few days.

Any reactions happening within 7 days of receiving the vaccine were common, but mild to moderate. Fever, chills, headache, or tiredness were more common after receiving the second dose and only a small number had a reaction severe enough to affect their daily activities.

Vaccine Efficiency

Based on information from the clinical trials, the Moderna vaccine was 94.1% effective in preventing COVID illness in those who received both doses and had no evidence of being previously infected. It had high efficacy in a diversity of ages, sexes, races, and ethnicities and even with those who had prior health conditions.

82% of those who participated in the trials were considered to have occupational risks of exposure — 25.4% of those were healthcare workers. 22.3% had at least one high risk condition such as lung disease, heart disease, obesity, diabetes, liver disease, or HIV infection; 4% had two or more conditions.

Updates on the vaccine are provided as more information becomes available. If you are considering getting vaccinated, be sure to remain up to date on current vaccine information via the CDC’s website. Remember that wearing your mask, engaging in proper hand washing techniques, and social distancing are ways to remain protected, with or without receiving the vaccine.
