You Might Need to Show Proof Of Vaccination Against COVID in These Places

Even with the COVID-19 vaccine still being voluntary, there may be instances where proof of vaccination is necessary. Some workplaces (healthcare facilities and businesses that may deal with the public) are beginning to follow along with this requirement, however, it is unlikely that it will be required in the United States.

The Biden administration has said, on record, that they oppose mandatory vaccination or the requirements of a vaccination “passport” and such other credentials. But, private companies can and will take part in such activities.

The Workplace

Among the most likely to have to partake in mandatory vaccinations are teachers, law enforcement officers, healthcare workers, and transportation workers. Sharona Hoffman, JD, co-director of the Law-Medicine Center at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, has noted that “we seem to be moving towards the honor system now[…]I’m seeing a lot of employers offering incentives (such as gift cards or other rewards for getting vaccinated) rather than imposing requirements.”

Other employers that are requiring vaccinations are doing so for liability reasons. Hoffman also states that although there has not been much strict enforcement of getting vaccinated — even in healthcare, there is a likelihood of it happening if a surge were to occur, especially with the current relaxation of masking and social distancing.

Schools

As every U.S State requires certain vaccinations to attend K-12 schools, it will come as no surprise if the COVID-19 vaccine becomes one of them. Schools currently require students to be vaccinated against polio, diphtheria, measles, mumps, tetanus, and whooping cough. 44 states allow exemptions for religious reasons and 15 allow exemptions for personal, moral, or other beliefs.

Some universities are requiring students to be vaccinated in order to attend in-person classes — Ivy Leagues like Brown and Harvard and down to smaller schools are partaking in this, as well as every school in the State University New York system.

Travelling

Destinations like Belize, the British Virgin Islands, Israel, and Iceland have begun to require proof of vaccination for international travels; others like Greece, Grenada, Nepal, and Romania have eased up on, or waived, COVID-19 testing requirements and quarantine mandates for vaccinated individuals.

Other countries may follow suit on this for international travels. Cruise ships are beginning to make vaccination a requirement to go on board as well.

Hospitals and Senior Care Centers

A healthcare provider called Providence has begun a program to allow vaccinated people to visit cancer patients. This comes with the hardship of the ban on visitation in hospitals in mind. Patient care has to come first in hospitals, but allowing this leeway brings immense relief for patients, staff, and their families.

Sporting Events and Concerts

A survey done in May 2021 showed that 57% of responders in the United States believed that proof of vaccination should be required for sporting events. Some venues have continued to operate at reduced capacity while others have begun to allow large crowds again. Some states have begun to use vaccination as an incentive to the venues, allowing them to bring in more events if they require proof of vaccination or recent negative COVID-19 test.
